Should Singapore support the opening of a casino?

Singapore should not support the opening of a casino.

Good morning Mr Tan and fellow schoolmates, my name is Phebe and these are my team mates, Szerong, Florence and Arina.
Our issue today is whether Singapore should support the opening of a casino.
And the four of us are here today to disagree that Singapore should open a casino.
First, let me ask you all a question.
Why do people gamble?
What do people get out of gambling?
We are here to tell you the cons of opening a casino.
Let me tell you the meaning of the word, gamble.
The word gambling means to play a game for money or property or to bet on an uncertain outcome.
If the outcome is uncertain, why would people risk money and properties to bet? Many answers to that question.
One main reason is because of greediness, one of the seven sins.
Greed is the desire to possess more than one need or deserves.
Gambling is the fastest way to wealth and fortune.
But unfortunately, not many end up in that route.
Despite many reasons to object the opening of a casino, the government still went ahead with the project.Let us tell you some of the reasons why opening the casino is a bad idea.

I disagree with this issue because as you can see, there are more and more Singaporeans started to travel to overseas(for example Genting) to gamble and majority of them will definitely ahead straight to the casino and start to place or bet. Normally for the first few bet if they win or lose they will have the mentality to carry on gamble even more because they will think that if I win "why not win more" , on the other hand if they lose, they will think that it's easy to win it back. Then slowly, pepole will lose all their money and start to borrow money. These have been happening on and off in Singapore.

The next reason why i disagree is because, since if Singaporeans want ti get into the casino, they need to pay an admission fee of $100, so people will have the mentality to think that it is just $100, I can win it back easily. So this make Singaporeans gamble even more.

Lastly, if you people here have watch the Drama show in channel 8 every saturday at 9.30pm call "Bet Your Life", where it is a true story about gamble that affects a person's life. Like just recently, which is last Saturday night there was this episode talking about this guy call Mr Blackjack and he met this guy call Raymond, a Professional gambler, both of them had the thinking that you can gamble for a living and make lots of money. So they travel round the whole to gamble and lastly Mr Blackjack who lose about 5 million dollar! So from the story you can tell that alot of people will stop working and they will think that gambling can help them in their living and it's stressless, so what for I work. So this may cause lots of problem from time to time.

I am opposing to the issue of starting a casino in Singapore. I think that starting of casino will cause gambling and will cause an increase in gambling mentality. As people gamble more, some of them will tend to lose money and resulting in borrowing money from loansharks and banks.

Banks and loansharks charges a high interest rate, making it hard to return the sum.

When they can't return the money, the bank will motgage the house, taking away their houses. This could also causes conflicts between families.

4th speaker: (Arina)

Singapore shall use her land, human resources and investment on better purposes, such as develop overseas investment, creativity product development, etc.
